The Association of Tarot Readers conferred certification on three Tarot Grandmasters and seven Tarot Masters on June 11, 1964. The three Tarot Grandmasters were Dr. Juliet Ashley of Denver, Colorado, Hellen Rutherford (later Hellen Rutherford-Hayes) of Philadelphia, and Dr. Rhodonn Starrus of Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The seven Tarot Masters were Rita Baker, Allan Curthoys, Dianne Fullerton, John Gilbert, Roberta Harris, Betty McCloud Reeves, and Donna Ruiseco.
The Association of Tarot Readers merged with the Professional Readers Guild to form the American Tarot Association in early 1995. Starting on October 14, 1995 the ATA started certifying qualified persons to the ranks of Tarot Apprentice, Reader, Master, and Grandmaster. On June 24, 1996 the ATA conferred the rank of Grandmaster on six candidates including: Rita Baker, Allan Curthoys, Dianne Fullerton, John Gilbert, and Donna Ruiseco. On June 28, 1996 the ATA initiated certification for Tarot Teachers though the name of this rank was later changed to Tarot Instructor.
The ATA set up the Clairvoyant Certification Board to handle tarot certifications effective June 27, 1997. The Clairvoyant Certification Board later changed its name to Tarot Certification Board and this corporation was dissolved on June 1, 2002. All the assets, tradenames, copyrights and proprietary properties of the TCB have been lawfully transferred to the TCBA which continues to serve those previously certified by the TCB or any of its predecessors.
